Font Choice Evaluation

Font Choice Evaluation
The results from my tally chart showed that the font they wanted was -

This is a font called "Pop Warner" and it was the highest voted out of my chosen fonts. Because this is the one my peers chose to be the best, i will use it on my cover. I think it will be good for my cover as its bald text and has no curves, curves in fonts make it look smooth and i think for a rock magazine a blunt edged text would look better and add to the edgy connotations with it. I may add a border around the text or a shadow behind it to make it appear more bold against the background, i still need to decide which colour the text should be but i think black would be the best choice as its a rock magazine and dark colours commonly go well with these types. I will make a tally chart to decide the colour so that the name, font, and colour of my magazine text was chosen by my target audience so that it will appear to the majority and isn't my biased opinion.

Results for my Magazine Font Tally

Results for my Magazine Font Tally
These are the results of the font type i gathered from my peers. They clearly show the chosen font they preferred was Second from top "Pop Warner"

Tally Chart for Magazine Font

Tally Chart for Magazine Font
Now that i have the name of my magazine, i created a tally chart to find out which font would be the best for my magazine cover. I made a tally chart and told my peers to choose the 3 they thought would be the best for my cover. I got the fonts from websites, the fonts are copyright free and aren't used by other magazines or it would appear as if I'm trying to plagiarise another magazines style. Just like the results for my magazine name, they will determine the font of my main text for my magazine.

Evidence of Name of Magazine Results

Evidence of Name of Magazine Results

This is the evidence of the magazine name results, showing how the majority thought that SLAM was
the best name for the magazine, even tho it was not my favourite name idea.

Name of Magazine Results Evaluation

Name of Magazine Results Evaluation
I passed my table out to my class and got them to choose 3 titles they most preferred. The results of my tally chart shows that the name SLAM was the most popular in my class and so i will use it as the name of my magazine. The name BLAM was close to winning, this is probably because the name BLAM and SLAM are similar and they sound the same, they roll off the tongue. I personally would have chosen CHUDE magazine as the name because i believe it's unique, interesting and would draw people in more. However because the results showed people preferred SLAM magazine as the name more. Then i will use it so my work is not biased.

Black Colour Board Analysis

Black Colour Board Analysis
Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death') Because of these connotations i want black to feature in my magazine as it's a very dark and serious color commonly used in the heavy metal and rock genre. However because my magazine isn't heavy metal and more focusing on a lighter side of the rock industry, i will not use it as much, and instead replace most with a dark blue.

White Color Board Analysis

White Color Board Analysis
White is considered to be the color of perfection. Its supposed to be the cleanest and purist color. However because its the color of paper, if i use it too much in my magazine, particulary on the background, it'll look like my magazine isn't filled. I will use it however on my front cover because i believe it will bring focus to my models close up face. I will include a shadow however to frame the image and bring the model forward. On my contents and 2 page spread however,  it won't be featured as much, however might be used in places.

Purple Color Board Analysis

Purple Color Board Analysis
Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products, for example "Barney The Dinosaur" It can also be seen as a royal color and quite rich as the color purple was seen as a color worn only by the rich because it was not natural. However because of the royal connotations i don't want it to be used in my magazine because i think the target audience is looking for something more lighthearted and less sophisticated as it's supposed to be fun. Purple may be seen as to fancy or classy for my magazine.

Blue Color Board Analysis

Blue Colour Board Analysis
Blue is seen as a masculine color, according to studies, it is highly accepted among males. Blue is used to promote products related to cleanliness, as its a clinical color. Its also commonly associated with sadness too, however not as much as the connotations to cleanliness and masculinity. Because of this i wan't blue to be used on my cover and contents page. However i don't want this to look like i'm gender specifying my magazine so i will make the colour much darker as it will become more netural and also more inclined towards the rock genre.

Green Colour Board Analysis

Green Colour Board Analysis
Green is the color of nature. It's the most neutral colour there is. Green is also commonly associated with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money because it is the color of the American dollar, and even tho we do not use this currency because of the American influence on our culture many people still make this connotation. Because of these reasons i don't think this color should feature too heavily in my magazine as it is a very tame color which isn't typically seen on a rock magazine. I may use it in places however it will not be a main color because it could make my magazine look boring or, because of its connotations with money, people might sub-consciously think the magazine is too expensive or boring (as it is neutral)

Yellow Colour Board Analysis

Yellow Colour Board Analysis
Yellow is associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Its used to evoke cheerfulness and is the colour most associated with happiness due to being the colour people associate with sun, summer, and summery flowers. Because of this positive connotations it would be good to be on my cover as it is the most eye catching colour of all if its vibrant. However i don't think it should be the colour of my magazine text as it is too cheerful for a rock magazine as the classic connotations of a rock magazine is quite grimy and dark. Therefore i will not use it in my magazine, possibly not anywhere as i believe there would be no place to include it and the magazine not look ridiculous.

Orange Colour Board Anaylsis

Orange Colour Board Analysis
The colour orange radiates warmth and happiness, combining the physical energy and stimulation of red with the cheerfulness of yellow. This would be a good colour to have on a magazine however because I'm doing a rock magazine i think the colour orange would be too mundane and dull for my magazine therefore i think i'm going to go for a more vibrant and eye-catching colour.

Red Colour Board Analysis

Red Colour Board
The connotations of red are fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is a very emotionally intense color. This is a good colour i could use for my magazine since i am doing a rock magazine and something intense would be good because it would excite and interest my audience. However, i won't use too much as the colour could become overpowering. I will use it in certain areas to highlight important words, sentences, or statistics.

Types of Shots for 2 Page Spread

Type of shots
These are a couple shots I would want to use in my 2 page spread, they will feature my model doing these kinds of shots, such as walking around town or doing something like having a confrontation with a photographer or a member of the public. These kinds of shots would make my magazine
much more interesting as multiple shots would give my work more variety.  In all magazine's there
is alawys a range of images usually the main person in the article is wearing diffrent clothes. This is why i will bring a spare change of clothes for my model and have them doing diffrent things. For example singing on stage, playing piano etc.

Magazine Name Survey

Magazine Name Survey
I made a survey which i will print and give to members of my class so i can find out which name would be best for my magazine. This is what the tally chart i have created using the names i would most prefer to be used for my magazine. They are names which i have taken suggestions of from my peers and ones i think sound the catchiest. I will ask that each person ticks 3 boxes so i can get a large number of results. This insures that the name of my magazine wasn't chosen by me per-say, it was chosen by peers who gave me non-biased resulted. Whichever gets the most votes will be the name of my magazine.

Model for my Magazine Cover

Model for my Magazine Cover
I have chosen my friend Lewis Holt to be my model for the cover of my magazine because he is photogenic, he dosent have any problems or deformities on his face that may make people purchasing the magazine feel uncomfortable that i need to remove through Photoshop, and because I can see him outside of school i can get any types of shots i need for my magazine or 2 page spread. I took a sample image to get an idea of the images i will need for my cover. I need to get a camera which brings the whole image into focus as his ears are out of focus and only the front of his face is in focus. It also gives me an idea to what i would change when i use his face for my front cover, for example i might re-shape his eyebrows to make them seem more clean like a celebrities would be, and i might change a feature to make it more interesting, for example an eye colour.

Prop Choice

Prop choice
I wanted to include a prop in my cover from the start after being inspired by other magazines with certain props in the cover which I think makes the image look more striking and intresting. I had a few ideas for which prop to use, for example either a guitar, a microphone, or something more suited to his heritage, such as a burrito, chalupa, or taco. I am going to use a microphone as the prop because I can easily acquire one and it will look more in place. A guitar was my second option however It would have been difficult to get hold of an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar would have made my model look more like an indie singer which wouldn't go well with my target audience.
